Seals

O-Ring Face Seals

  • Non-Contacting: Creates and maintains a lubricating film (cushion of air) that the seal face rides on.
  • Virtually Zero Leakage: High pressure "air barrier" eliminates oil leakage across the sealing interface.
  • Reduced Heat Generation: By as much as 80%-90% over conventional seal designs.
  • Extended Seal Life: Non-contacting mode results in very low wear and dramatically increased seal life.

  • Secondary sealing element
  • Loading device
  • Various hardware prevents leakage of a media (liquid or gas) along rotating shafts

No-Contacting Face Seals

Employing hydrodynamic principles, Rexnord®'s patented Type-16 Shallow Hydropad Seals generate a lubricating film of high pressure air that:

  • Enables seal faces to operate in a non-contacting mode, cutting heat generation by 80% - 90% (dropping seal interface temperatures 100°F to 200°F in typical aerospace applications)
  • Acts as a high pressure "barrier of air" that reduces leakage across the seal interface to virtually zero
  • Dramatically increases seal life (up to 30,000 hours is feasible)

Controlled Gap Seals

Floating labyrinth or controlled gap seals are used for sealing cryogens or hot gases from bearings and other mechanisms used in gas turbines, interstage compressors, refrigeration compressors, aircraft cabin compressors, jet engines, superchargers and missiles. Compact construction simplifies installation in those applications where space is limited.

Theory of Operation—The carbon insert is encased in a metal retaining band. The assembly of these two parts is designed to match the thermal and centrifugal growth of the shaft or sleeve that is to be sealed. Consequently, as the temperature rises, the floating carbon ring assembly (commonly referred to as the labyrinth ring assembly) grows at a rate similar to that of the shaft or sleeve.

Segmented Seals

Multiple ring segmented seals are designed with segmented rings, to operate in contact with the shaft throughout the life of the seal. Since no elastomers are used, the Type-6 allows for an exceptionally wide range of temperatures, from cryogenic of -400 °F to as hot as 1600 °F.

Segmented seals are used for sealing cryogens or hot gases from bearings and other mechanisms in gas turbines, interstage compressors, refrigeration compressors, aircraft cabin compressors, missiles, jet engines, and superchargers. Compact construction simplifies installation in applications where space is limited. The Type-6 seal is recommended where lower leakage rates are desirable and contact with the shaft is acceptable.

Custom-engineered, the advanced-material brush seal is capable of reducing oil and energy consumption and reducing emissions in tough environments.

  • Multi-application Use: Bi-directional design that can replace metal labyrinths, carbon ring seals and metallic brushes.
  • Rugged Design: Durable construction resistant to handling damage is compatible with high speed and high temperature environments.
  • Reduced Leakage: By as much as 85% over that of metal labyrinth designs. Limits oil leakage at low pressure differentials.
  • Reliable Performance: Low wear materials yield consistent flows/barrier consumption throughout the operating life cycle.
